Live: eonet-world-map-main.vercel.app
Pulse puts NASA’s EONET feed of natural events (wildfires, storms, volcanoes, sea ice) on an interactive WebGL globe inside a live sky with a real sun, moon, aurora and stars. It’s three files with no build step and no backend. All data comes live from public APIs in the browser.
Features
- Events: color-coded points per category, with pulsing rings on fresh detections and a detail drawer with an auto-fetched Wikipedia summary. Filters cover status, a lookback window from 7 days to 3 years, search and category. The Earth Pulse Index compares the last 7 days against the trailing-year average.
- Live mode: polls EONET every 3 minutes and USGS earthquakes every minute, with a live feed and optional browser notifications. Earthquakes render as spires, with height for magnitude and color for depth.
- A real sky: the day/night line follows the actual position of the sun. The sun, moon phase and ~5,000 stars (with 89 constellations) are computed from real astronomy formulas and turn with sidereal time. The moon phase matches published ephemeris to within minutes.
- Aurora: NOAA’s 30-minute OVATION forecast, drawn as animated curtains on the GPU in a single draw call.
- Timeline: scrub or play events forward at up to 64×, and export a 10-second timelapse video.
- Story tour and sharing: an auto-guided tour of the biggest current events, plus share links that encode your exact view.
Built with globe.gl on three.js, with custom shaders for the sun, moon and aurora.
